How many of you care about your eyesight?
Question: Okay, I'm just curious how many of you actually care about your eyesight? How many of you have visited the Eyes on the Road website? Only reason I am asking this is because we have recieved very little feedback from the car.Net Cartaste community. It seems like none of you, or car drivers in general, don't care or worry about a problem until it affects you. Doesn't matter what kind of health problem it is, wether it is Heart, cancer, or in my case vision problems. You, the caring industry professional, want to complain about everything, and you come here to car.net to do that. But when there is a place like The Schepens Eye Research institute who wants to help and is willing to help and get your feedback, you don't seem to care. They can't pay you more, they can't fix HOS, but they can keep you and your family and friends healthy for the future, doesn't this mean anything to any of you? This fundraising effort that I have helped put together is not about me, please don't think that. I am just one person who is trying to make a difference and can benefit from the research that is being done at places like The Schepens. I hate telling my story, I hate having to relive the last year and a half everytime somebody asks me. But I look at it as a means to an end, and that end is getting my eyesight back someday. So what would you the driver like to see on the Eyes on the Road website? Would you submit your car to be the "Eye catching car of the month"? What kind of tips would you like to see regarding vision? Sunglass's? Eye care? For a set donation price, would you buy a t-shirt or hat if they were made available? How about a model car? Stickers? Safety Glasses? Any other thoughts? Let me know, I want your feedback, If you haven't visited the "Eyes on the Road" website, here is the link: Thanks -Mark Answer: Bump! Answer: I could see a T-shirt sayin eyes on the road" Answer: well since I got 2 pm's on my attempet at humor( one nice one not so nice I changed my post to make those who are humorless happy , but don't worry I won't make any more post on this thread , and prolly will refrain from makining on any other one, less I offend someone. btw this is to bump the post so that you can keep it alive since it dosent seem to rate a sticky. Answer: I think you should have a variety of items to offer for people to purchase. I am alway interested in different coffee cups. Higher end pens are another good item. That would be a couple of items I would be interested in purchasing. Answer: Answer: They and you want feedback....Tell em to sponsor a forum....They put up some money then yall can have a hayday on folk's eyesight..... Answer: Answer: It's human nature in general. With all due respect brow beating members will do no good for YOUR cause. Answer: To Rabalem and all, Well, first of all, I’m not “brow beating” as you put it. I have asked some simple questions here now and in the past. Nobody here has seemed to care, er, well at least that is what I think since nobody responds. For starters, if you want to know why you should be interested in what The Schepens Eye Institute does and why they do the research they do, try this: Next time your home, put on a blindfold for a couple hours. Try and do everything in your life you do on a daily basis and tell me how easy it is without your eyesight. See how hard some of the most simplest tasks in your life become. Make a sandwich, navigate around your house, get dressed and make sure everything matches, watch TV, do your laundry and clean your house, use your computer, oh yeah, and what are you going to do for a living? How would you get there? If you need something from the store, how would you get there and get that item all by yourself? I spent a lot of time learning how to do all of these things over again, and it’s hard enough and I have some vision. But it’s not enough vision to read small print (ie: newspaper/magazine), I can’t drive a car anymore, I have to either take a bus or a taxi or get a ride from a friend. I use my computer with the aids of a screen reader and a magnification program in order to use it. All of my appliances are marked, the microwave has marker dots that are raised so I know the numbers, where the start button is at, same goes for my oven, for different degrees and so forth, the laundry machine and dryer are marked the same way. And guess what ? I have to remember all of this, which dots mean what. Can you read Braille? You will need it to label certain things too. I am not trying to make you feel sorry for me, I just want all of you to realize how important your vision is. I want you to be interested in preserving it. I want you to know that there are places like The Schepens working to keep your vision/eyesight healthy so if something would happen to you in the future, there might be a medical operation to solve the problem. I’m just one person who like many of you, I took my vision for granted. Due to a accident, my vision/eyesight was taken away. But I have never been a person to sit on the sidelines, I could easily lay down and die, I could get depressed, and I was there already, but like the saying in the movie Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dieing”. While I am not a doctor and I am not a rich millionaire, I’m trying to help support a great cause as much as I can. . This effort keeps me occupied, it keeps me believing that I will get my eyesight back someday. Knowing that I can make a difference in the world for millions of people who suffer from vision loss means a lot to me. Haven’t you ever wondered why you were put on this earth? I now feel like I have a reason or meaning to my life. I hope what I said makes sense, we all work in a great industry, and at times the general public looks down upon us. The bad seems to outshine the good most of the time. This is a chance to do something good to help change an image of our industry, it’s a chance to help yourself, your friends, and your family. If a t-shirt, or a ball cap is what it takes for you to feel proud that you helped support a good cause, then your showing your pride. I just want to know from you, the car driver, the industry professional, what would it take to get you interested to help support Eyes on the Road and vision research? Give me ideas, give me some of your thoughts. The people who have helped put Eyes on the Road together all want to know, not just me. I look forward to your feedback. Thanks, -Mark Answer: I am not trying to sound callous about this, at all. But please remember there are a whole myriad of 'others' wanting driver feedback. carstops, carer Buddy, Highway Watch, the ATA, the Government, and a whole slew of people 'selling' something. I understand that what your asking isnt about something for sale, but alot of people are not interested in something until it benefits them. You ask about what would it take to help people get interested in supporting Eye's on the Road.... I honestly think, just off the cuff, that the biggest benefit would be for the Schepens Eye Institute to go to car shows, and explain the benefits of wearing sunglasses to drivers. Some do, some dont. I do. Informational data showing the damage the sun can do to your eyes, may encourage drivers to buy shades to help their eye sight. If you ask them about donations for research, thats the same as American Cancer Society hitting people up for donations. I donate to several charities and orginizations throughout the year. They are all for a worthy cause. The average driver does not care about the health of his eyes until something happens. By then,it is too late. Consequently, they need education. Like others have mentioned, merchandise some pens and coffee cups, or even a coffee thermos. Something a driver can use, that may serve as a subtle reminder...Good luck! Answer: I for one do not take my eyesight for granted and go for a compressive eye exam once a year. mdharder ; I went to eyes on the road web site..I hate to say it did not have much information for protecting carers eyesight, just driving tips.. I did like the section on eye problems . Tips on protecting the eyes is what I expected and was disappointed in not finding any. The site did not impress me at all.Show me more than I can get from web-MD As RC stated about the importance of sun glasses. Posting the data on the web site would be most helpful.
