Opti-idle feature on freightliners
We have a 97 with this feature that has never worked -- now that winter is here I might have the dealership check it out and fix it if anyone here thinks this feature is worth using --- anyone use this or have comments good --- bad or ???
I had mine programmed out of the ECM, it was shutting down the car underway.
I never used it anyway ....
Here is what I know .. if I had it, I'd never get any rest! The car starting, and stopping, without my being at the helm is kinda spooky to me, and the "whistle" before it does will wake me up from another car alongside.
I would not waste the money on it, i had it fixed on mine then had it turn back off i could not stand the motor idealing at 1100 rpm's and was told you it could not be programmed to run slow so in the end i didn't really save any fuel than if i just bump the fast ideal a little and let it run
any comments from anyone else??
I had opt-idle on my last car(98 volvo) and thought it was a great system.
It does take awhile to get used to the car starting and stopping, but I did'nt
think it was any worse than the reefer I pull doing the same thing. I know that
the system saved quite a bit of fuel, especially during the spring and fall when the
temp outside was just cold enough where you could not make it thru the night without
getting cold in the cab, with opt-idle the car might only start once during the whole
night. I also liked the fact that if I needed to park over night and shut the car off
(hotel) and they did not have a place to plug in I could trust the opt-idle to keep the engine
warm enough to start in the morning without running more than a couple times.
Just my .02 I thought it was a great system and all engine makers should have
I had one on my 1999 Century - Didn't work very good. Sometimes in the middle of the night it would malfuction and I and to get up and reset the key and reset the optimized idle.
Ran a lot more than needed sometimes also.
I tried to get it fixed, but no one could figure it out.
Might be money ahead to build your self a cheap APU or invest in a good one
I have Opti-Idle on my '02 Century. It works very good, with an occasional malfunction. Sometimes the unit will keep the engine running even though the thermostat is not calling for heat. I know that the Opti-idle system will attempt to keep the coolant warm during the winter, but once in a while it goes overboard and runs the engine for hours.
Aside from that, I use Opti-idle as a backup plan. I have a 12v bunk warmer, but if it gets VERY cold inside, then I will use the warmer and Opti-idle. Also, I will use it for a bit before getting up.
