Question:
I have been told by a couple of people(one I trust, the other, welll )that OSHA has made a regulation that commercial vehicles must be air conditioned.Does anybody know if this is true or just wishful thinking.

Answer:

Rob, I don't know the answer from OSHA... But what's next shade and controlled environment for the people that work out side?
Part 396.3(a)(1) of the FMCSR says that all parts and accessories must be in proper working order.

Mothers all want their sons to grow up to be President, but they don't want them to become politicians in the process.
John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)

Answer:

I don't know about the shade and controlled environment, but I do know that if you require someone to work outside in the elements, they are supposed to have some formof relief such as a source of drinking water and yes, shade to take a break in.
Speaking from the voice of experience,if you are sitting in a cement mixer crawling along in lo gear, underdrive at an idle pouring curbing on a 90 degree day,a/c is not an unreasonable request to prevent heat exhaustion.

Answer:

Only parts and accessories required by the regulations or which directly affect safety need to be in good working order.
I do not believe that there is a federal OSHA regulations requiring air conditioning in commercial vehicles. I will check it out, however.

Thanks

Answer:

Let me start by saying that one does not get ahead by keeping another back. Nor does one's position get better by knowing someone else is worse.
But I gotta say, Rob, that your logic to demand A/C because you have to sit on your butt on a 90^ day in a concrete car during a pour pales to the guy who is outside in the sun at the business end of your car humping the mud into the form...

Answer:

Not trying to be a smart a** but get the little green book out that you are given when you hire on with any company and read it cover to cover it is the same book that all d.o.t officers carry with them ( there's is just in bigger text.. you can get one from J.J. Keller).
A/C is a luxury not a necessity .
Heat is a necessity
You can live in 120 degree heat....You cannot live for long at 0 degrees

Answer:

I was not demanding that my employer put a/c in.I was simply trying to find a real answer to a rumored law that I had heard about.
I am not some sniffly snot nosed kid who just came out of driving school and thinks that the industry owes him everything that most drivers of any caliber have had to work a long time to get.
I have spent my time in Whites(real ones, not Volvos) and Cabover Binders with no a/c,no power steering and,for one very cold Maine winter,no heat
I was simply saying that such a law would be a welcome relief for a lot of different situations and stated my own as an example.
Those of you on your high horses can come on down, tie the horse up and relax.Just trying to find some info from a reputable source instead of a bunch of hot concrete drivers. Sheesh!
Get those horses some water. They've been ridden hard.

Originally You can live in 120 degree heat....You cannot live for long at 0 degrees
That's debatable. I spent six winters in Alaska at 40 below and survived. I would not last long at 120 above. You can always put more clothes on, but there is only so much you can take off.
