Antidepressants

Question:
I have just graduated from driving school and was hired by FFE.I went to Dallas for orentation and was sent home because,I indicated on the medical form that I am taking Effexor. Does this
medication show up on the drug tests? (did not
take a drug screen) Do all OTR companies ban the
use of antidepressents?

Answer:

I take Effexor (300 mg. daily) and all I needed was a letter from my physician stating it would not affect my ability to operate a CMV safely.

Answer:

391.41(b)(9) Mental Disorders
A person is physically qualified to drive a CMV if that person:
has no mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with ability to drive a motor vehicle safely.
They go on to address the fact that many of these disorders can, for various reasons, affect the driver's coordination, attentiveness, memory and reasonsing. They can cause dizziness, shortness of breath, drowsiness, confusion, weakness, paralysis, and can result in accidents.
The guidance for the medical examiner as defined by the CFR follows:
When examining the driver, it should be kept in mind that individuals who live under chronic emotional upsets may have deeply ingrained maladaptive or erratic behavior patterns. Excessively antagonisitc, instinctive, impulsive, openly agfgressive, paranoid,or severly depressed behavior patterns which may interfere with the driver's ability to drive safely.
Those individuals who are highly susceptible to frequent states of emotional instablility (schizophrenia, affective psychoses, paranoia, anxiety, or depressive neuroses) MAY warrant disqualification. Careful consideration should be given to the side effects and interations of medications in the overall qualification determination.
So.....did you even see a medical doctor for the exam? Was there any contact between the examining physician and the prescribing physician to discuss this issue? Did they deem you 'disqualified' or just send you home?
Effexor does list drowsiness as a possible side effect (but so does Ibuprofen). The examining physician is supposed to try and determine if you have that side effect. And that should be determined after getting a history of your problem, looking at the dosage amount and frequency, etc.

Answer:

I've been taking Prozac for over 2 years. Never had a problem with the company, DOT, etc. I do not know what the difference is between the medication you are taking and what I am taking. If your medication is a problem, talk to your doctor about changing it. Now, Nurse Red, I am not giving medical advice. Just speaking from experience.

Answer:

To answer Nurse Red question, I filled out the DOT
medical form and was called in by the medical
examiner (Doctor?). when he saw that I was taking
effexor, he did not ask me any details concerning
the medication. nor did I take a drug test. He
sent me to a safety officer who in turn desgualified me and sent me home. I asked why
and his reply was that the company is self-insured
and that the main concern was running out of medication while on the road. Do I have any recourse on this?

Answer:

Scroll down to the area called "Resolution of Conflict".
You will have to work thru the DOT office in your state or the state where you were DQ"d. I'm not sure which one.
Check back and let us know how it goes.

Answer:

company number one is ffe out of dallas, tx
company number 2 is pam transport out of tonitown, arkansas. most companies will hire you, if u have a doctors waiver. ffe and pam will not touch u, if u take anykind of antideppresent. not under any circumstances

Answer:

Nurse Red,
You might not like the implication of this question, but I hope that you will still answer it. Do the blood and urine tests screen for the use of antidepressants? I don't believe that they do, but I'm asking to be sure.
Bare in mind that this is just my own personal opinion, but I would never list an antidepressant because there is still too much discrimination and misunderstanding regarding the need for these medications.
I realize that this is a pretty broad statement and I know that there are different classes of antidepressant drugs. I guess I should clarify that statement by saying that I am referring to the tricyclic drugs such as has been mentioned... Prozac, Effexor, Zoloft and others. If the user suffers no side effects......and many don't.... personally, I wouldn't even mention it.
Please understand that this is just my own personal opinion and should not be construed as "advice". To lump ALL antidepressants into one category and to use that information to disqualify someone who might be fully functional with their use is to me....discriminatory.
Okay, I'm off of my soapbox......LOL!

I have said it a thousand times, a person can be too honest.

Answer:

The DOT mandated testing does not call for Antidepressant testing.....
However, if the Co. policy states so... they can run a more comprehensive test on a NON-DOT basis that MAY spot it. Then what are ya gonna say???? HMMMMM.........???????

Answer:

In my previous reply. concerning companies that will not hire you if you take antidepressants. I personally contacted pam transport, about a year ago. I asked the nice lady, whom answered the phone. If pam transport had a list of prescribed drugs that would disqualify a potential future driver. She said they did. The very first question she asked me was this.ARE YOU TAKING ANY ANTIDEPPRESANTS? i ANSWERED YES.SHE THEN INFORMED ME THAT I WAS DISQUALIFIED, AND THAT PAM TRANSPORT DOES CHECK FOR ANTIDEPPRESANTS, IN THE DRUG SCREEN PROCESS!!!!!!!!!! FFE OUT OF DALLAS,TX..SAME THING...NO ANTIDEPRESSANTS!!!!!
HIS EXACT WORDS WERE. WE CAN'T USE ANYONE LIKE YOU!!! I am not trying to be mean here. I am just telling everyone that there are companies that do check for antideppresants during the drug screen.
even if a company doesn't check for antideppresants during the drug screen. There is another way you can get caught, unless you want to lie. I have several cardriving friends.
They all told me that before they took there drug tests. The drug tester asked them this question.
Are you taking any kind of prescribed medication?
you can lie and say no, if that particular company doesn't screen for antidepresants. but, what if. you get involved in an accident later?
worse case scenario.. someone gets killed. You will be drug tested, and guess what will show up on your drug test. antidepresants. You may go to jail for manslaughter. It is best to be honest up front. Some companies will hire you. and some companies won't.
If the company hires you, and knows you take antidepressants. You won't ever have to worry about failing a drug screen.
One more thing. If your company runs into canada.
sometimes they ask you if you have any drugs with you. Illegal or prescribed. What r u going to do then? just a thought. I will always be honest, and tell a prospective employer that I am taking antidepressants. You can really get into a lot of trouble if you don't.
there are a lot of companies that will hire you. I personally know several drivers that take antidepresants and drive otr. prozac, zoloft, paxil. etc. But there companies all know that they take these medications.
I believe it has a lot to do with the insurance companies. I hope this helps. just be honest!

Answer:

Each to his own. You made some valid points and so did I. It's a personal judgment call as I see it.
