Satellite radio noise in my cb

Question:
I installed a xm radio in my car and now I get a lot of static in my cb radio. I have tried different power source but still have so much static I have to turn the squelch so high I cant receive anything on the cb. When I turn the power of on the xm receiver the static drops by about half, and if I disconnect the power source completely to the xm receiver the static is totaly gone. Is there maybe a filter I can instal in my cb power cord? I would apreciate any help with this as I would like to keep both xm radio and the cb radio.
Thanks Quigley

Answer:

Sorry to hear about your problem. First thing make sure your grounds are seperate for each radio. don't run a common ground wires twisted togeather ect. than do the same thing for pos+ power seperate the leads.try running your c.b. off the pos+ batt termanal this should help I also do this with my neg lead also for my radio. if this won't help yes they do have a noise filter for the power leads you can get a 20 amp one at radio shack or any good c.b. shop be sure to ground the filter.. elec static can be a real problem to track down it can come from many sources. try moving the xm unit away from the c.b. seek a good c.b. shop if these basic tips do not help. how old is the c.b.? how old is the c.b. power cable? How old is the antenna cable? is it a good shielded cable or cheap car stop cable? Might be time for new cables? the xm unit can generate a signal that the c.b. might be picking up through the power leads or the ant cable. take the xm unit back and try another. what kind of xm unit did you get / a roady 2?also clean your battery cables take them off wire brush them and the batt termanals then replace also do this with the alternator cables mite help and it's good maint prior to winter. if you buy a power filter buy one for the xm unit also you won't need a 20 amp unit ask at the store or shop. good luck in your hunt for the static. Answer:

what type of xm? a standalone or all in one (am,fm,xm)? You may need to reroute the power and antenna cables. I had that problem with a Delphi unit. The transformer in the lighter plug was causing static.

Answer:

Its a roady 2. To date I have moved the xm antenna all over the car, changed the cb antenna, changed the coax, tried a different roady 2, tried several different grounds for the cb, tried different power sources for the cb, tried a different cb, still same result. The only thing that is the same is the power source for the roady 2. It is a cigarrette lighter plug. Have been reluctant to cut the plug off and wire directly to the battery. Going to Rado Shack today to see about a filter. How did you fix your problem? Did you use another plug or eliminate it? Thanks for you responses so far.

Answer:

Radio Shack no longer carries any noise filters, getting out of the 12 volt business alltogether. I think I will cut the plug of the xm receiver and run it straight to the battery and see if that helps.

Answer:

I ran power direct from toe fuse block and my other radios directly from the Batt good luck.

Not a good idea, the transformer steps the voltage down to 9v to run the XM roady.

Answer:

I have never used any of those xm radios but...
It might be the cig lighter adapter they supplied.
You may find that it has a switching power supply in it like a cell phone lighter adapter.
Switching supplies can be very noisy if not designed or shielded well.
You probably do not want to cut off the plug before discovering if the roady actually runs on 12 volts or 9 volts.

Is the XM receiver and CB close together???
One or two things to look at.
Are you using the built-in FM modulator in the XM receiver.
The FM modulator "might" be the culprit if the two radios are to close together.
OR... the XM receiver, not the wiring or ground that may be interfering with the CB.
Are you using an external stereo amplifier???
