Antenna for A Van
Question: I am going to install my Cobra 29ltd in my 1994 Ford Van. I have been told to mount it center of the roof for the best ground plane. What is the best antenna I could mount while keeping a low profile or low height on top? This antenna will be mounted only where I mentioned and no where else.Any help will be appreciated. Thank You Phil Casey. Answer: Either a K-40 or Wilson, they come in both magnetic or trough the roof mounts. Both have a removeable base, leaving only a few extra inches of clearance when parking inside a garage. I prefer the K-40. Answer: Dagwood, You are correct about mounting the antenna in the center of the roof for best performance. Also remember that the longer the antenna, the better the performance. I have a Wilson 1000 magnetic base with a 6' steel whip mounted on top of my pickup. It gets out pretty good even barefoot. Radio is a Uniden Grant. Wilson also makes a 5/8 wave, i believe they call it, with the radiating conductor wound on a glass rod in various lengths. They have adjustable tips for best SWR. I had a 3' one of these on my Mack dump and it worked great! The handy thing about the mag mount is that when I have to use a downtown parking garage I just remove the mount, bend the whip double and put it inside the cab before entering the garage. Hope this helps. Ray Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.cartaste.com
