He did it AGAIN!

Question:

Don wrote a check for $600 and we dont only have $13 in the bank.
Heres what happened. He told me he sold his laptop for $500 (which we just put $400 in it)
he has only had it for a month or so. He then went into a Staples and bought a new one for around $1200. Like we are rich or something!!
He said when he gets his check(direct deposit) Tuesday that it will help. HELLOOOO i need that check for rent and besides his checks are NEVER ever near $600, they are always around $300. What are we gonna do? Thank God that account is just in his name. But this is what the bank does-if he writes more than whats in there, the bank will minus is account and when he gets direct depost the bank will take whatever they need to put towards the negative. Thats what they have been doing but with a check this big?? How can anybody be so stupid? so selfish? This check needs to go to the D.A. and maybe then he will learn. I just wrote a check in my accont to pay for a fine he got in California and was counting on his paycheck on Tuesday to cover my check. I was gonna take the money out like i always do. Does anybody know what i can do? Besides the obvious-clobber him a good one! We wont have any money for a long time if this check goes to the bank. I was going to go in the semi in 2 weeks also and need to buy food and get my prescriptions. One more thing, after i was crying and so mad at him he said-I'll sell this new laptop for $300 and wire you the money. What a dummy. The laptop is brand new and costs $1200. For some reason he has $200 on him also. And there is no way he can take it back, cuz hes not in the same city, i think.
somebody please help.
thanks you guys, glad i can turn to you.
Patti

Answer:

Maybe he can return the laptop to the same chain? If there is a local store where he is now then maybe he can do that. My lands I think I would kill him.
Someone needs to sit down with that boy and have a serious financial discussion. I don't know if you are married or not, but if not then try as hard as you can to keep your name off his stuff and vice versa. I know that sounds horrible, but you MUST protect your own interests.
You have to try and talk some sense in him. The best thing my father ever taught me was how to have, get, and keep great credit. Hope I didn't sound too harsh. I really don't know what else to possibly tell you.
Good luck and you can borrow my cast iron skillet.

Patti..first of all, have some chocolate and a big hug from me
I agree that the two of you need to sit down and talk about this.WOW.I cant believe he would do that. Not very responsible if you ask me.Bills come first, then the toys.He might be able to take it back.Bradley got a laptop at staples and he has so many days to take it back.It should say on his receipt. They may be able to take it back to another store, even if not the same one where he bought it.I hope he checks into that.Would be the right thing to do.
Good luck to you.Hope everything works out.

Answer:

OMG I couldn't imagine dealing with type of stress! (((((HUGS))))) to you and chocolate too
I am pretty certain he should be able to take that back into any Staples and get his refund.
Smile at someone today, it might be the only one they get to see

Answer:

I would say take the check book away, but if it HIS account that would be kinda hard to do. WOW That just blows my mind that someone over the age of 16 would do that!!
I also have a cast iron skillet you can borrow, you could have one in each hand and get him from both sides!!
Good Luck. sounds like you are really going to need it with this.
God Bless America!

Answer:

I don't know if this will help or not, but I have been in banking for several years. Yes, banks do pay checks against accounts that get direct deposit, because they are almost guaranteed to get their money, but....only up to a certain dollat amount. At our bank if you reach $500.00 in overdrafts, they start returning your checks,. So, there is a possibilty that the abnk won't pay the check. But, the staore can also put it through a second time to try and clear it. They usually do.
The second time that it is returned, they will prosecute if the owner of the check has not contacted them and made it good.
And now....HE DID WHAT ??????
Randi
Tell him to take it back immediately !

Answer:

For all the advice!!
Thanks much Randi for the insight on the bank. that made me feel better. I hope the bank does that.
As far as taking it back, he said he threw away the box and that Staples will only exchange but not give a refund. I dont know if thats true.
Thanks for all the skillets and pans too!
The thing with Don is that he isnt good with money. Last month after getting rid of his tyme card, he got another without me knowing and took out all the money for rent and spent it on his first laptop.
He says he will drive out if his way to stop here and get some money in the bank. He is going to try and sell that laptop for $300 even though its worth $1200. He just cant stop being stupid once hes on a roll.
will let ya know if we get the money in the bank.
He wrote the check on Friday in Ohio and we live in Wisconsin.

Answer:

Pattti,
I know where your comming from. My hubby wrote checks for the rent before he went for training both times. We were suppose to get direct deposit on our tax refunds. He missed 1 number in our bank account number so when the bank got them they sent them back to the IRS and the state. And it took them 8 weeks to send us paper checks. He wrote the checks out based on the fact that the money was suppose to be there 2 days after he wrote the checks. I took the check book away from him. I also pack him enough food so he doesn't need to eat out. Then I told him that if he needs to take money out to call me before he does so that I can tell him how much is in the account.
I definately know where your comming from. I hope it all works out for you.
Hugs and choclate comming your way!!!!!

Answer:

with plucky take the check book away from him!!!
when I was on the road I had my own seperate account for road money my only access was my atm card ( check card) get him his own seperate from your house hold account that way you will not have to worry how you are gonna pay the rent! also tell him you will get a set amount to spend a week, I had a whole 60 dollars so I had to budget my money if I wanted something special I saved or unloaded more loads my whole paycheck went home every week. I did not touch nor did I have access to that money if i needed more money I called my husband. and he would put money in my account. Also when you impliement this system you will need to make an agreement on the com checks because it is very easy to com check your check away!!! park him in a chair and give him a good one!!! Maybe he needs the low down in writing on what he can and can not do!!! as for him driving out of his way to get money, ya'll need to agree on him not taking the rent money or bill money MEN!! keep your chin up hun!

Answer:

And if you ONLY Keep emergency/expenses money in his, there's nothing to blow. no checks to be carried, or only an ATM card...the rest of the direct deposit, withdraw IN CASH not by check and deposit into your account..or a separate joint account that he doesnt have access to at all on the road...and pay bills with that.
Hubby was always bad about that...or me thinking or being told he had one amount of money when he in fact spent what I was counting on for bills on anything from beer to car "toys". So, I gave up. He has to write me a check to MY account for bills..the same amount each week. Extra he keeps, spends, or we put what we can in savings (the first time Ive had one in years thanks to the tax refund).
And yes, talk to him about this. To sell a $1200 computer for $300 is silly and a very poor investment, cause he will probably go out and get another, dont you think? Let him drive out of his way to drop off money for bills..it won't kill him. Or use Fed Ex or something.
Hate to hear you struggling and dont mean to stick my nose in it at all...I got cast iron skillets too, but after I got tired of swinging up (its awful to be so short), gave it up and found another way around his "shortcomings".
Now it I could fix the rest as easy. He, of course, quit his new job after 7 weeks and 3 days...just 2 days from graduating to his own car. So, a pitiful $100 check last week and nothing this week, so yeah, I been there, done that, and he will have nothing in his bank account from here on out if he doesnt do something to earn it. If he goes without beer or cig, too bad..But my kids wont go hungry, my bills will be paid or he and his checkbook can take a hike..but thats just MY situation..a whle nother story.
Sending you some fine San Francisco chocolate my boss gave me....and a huge hug.

My husband wrote our "landlord" a check and specifically told him not to cash it until I called and gave him the go-ahead. We were supposed to get our tax refund in two days, and Kenny wrote checks before he left so I wouldn't have to, (I told him I was capable and it was a bad idea but he didn't listen). Anyway, Social Security intercepted our refund and although it was THEIR mistake, it took me two weeks to straighten out. I had to go to the SS building and show them proof it was their mistake. Then it took two more weeks for them to send us the check. In that time, our landlord tried to cash Kenny's check without hearing from me and it bounced, of course. We also had loan people trying to take money out because it was an automatic withdrawal Kenny approved since we were supposed to have the refund. Well, our bank account was in the negative by $700 and our landlord called the police and had a warrant out for Kenny's arrest for a bad check!!! I bawled when I received a letter stating that there was a warrant out for his arrest. The landlord is a jerk and should have waited for me to call, but Kenny should never have given him a check, he trusts people way too much. The SS deal was unexpected, but I told Kenny not to do it 'cause you just never know what will come up! We did get things straightened out when our refund arrived, but it was awful what went on before the mistake was noted and the check arrived. We have a joint account, but Kenny listens to me now .

Am new here (sorta, kinda....been reading for 2 years but just dont post very often...LOL!) but just made chocolate brownie's....here is one for you! (and nuff to share with everyone else too!)
Gee's and I thought I was the only one who was married to a dum bunny.... Yep my hubby has done this also. And just when I think I have him broke from this really bad habit (he likes to use the Visa Check Card and doesn't tell me) he will do it again. The last time I put my foot down and told him, if he wanted to live under a bridge, he was going it alone! I think he has taken me seriously this time, cause I check our account almost daily (via the telephone) and it balances to the penny now.
This is what we do:
1.) All money gets direct deposited
2.) He gets 100.00 per week to live on and thats it! When its gone, its gone... On the way to the car we stop at the bank and he gets his money. I buy him sodas, cigs and snacks to take with him.
3.) If he takes one dime out for an advance he better have the tolls to back it up, cause he sure better not use our Bill Money.
4.) He has to call me b4 any money comes out of the account or an advance is taken period, cause we live like everyone else, paycheck to paycheck.
If he don't follow the rules, he's living under the bridge alone. It has taken me about 6 months to get this to work. But it is working for us. The last time he pulled one of his stunts (and it was a while ago), he was laid over near a buddy of his, and they had way too much time on their hands. When I found out, I gave him the ultimadum, either his buddy or me. So far its me and the buddy is history.
Of course the iron skillet works too in a pinch!

Answer:

Well, he stopped in today with $600 and a laptop.
HOW? He sold his TV and his GPS and took a cash advance and had some cash on him. He went to the bank tyme machine (bank was closed) and deposited it all. I guess thats fine. He also gave me his checks and i got rid of them. I just wish he wouldnt act like his laptop is his baby. He has always been a computer nerd- with long hair.
Anyways, it seemed kind insugnifficant because today i took my 12 year old son to the doctor and he has Osgood Schlatters disease of the knee and a possible fracture. He has been trying to tell his Dad that his knee has bothered him but his Dad doesnt pay much attention. I was going to make an appointment but i dont really care for his pediatrician. Today i took him to a different clinic (urgent care) and his Dad thinks that those doctors dont know anything and this is all not true. Some Dad he has huh? We will find out next week just how true it is!! He has an appointment with an Orthopedic doctor.
Don is not his Dad in case you were confused.
thanks again for the advice!
