Moving out of Flatbeds into mechinery/OD loads and question
Question: I copied Stuffs post to see if there is anyone who has moved up in the flatbed out of tarping and into OD loads. If so can you list the company your with and how you got to where you are today, Thanks. Stuffs posted the following: (About Flatbeds. I have the impression that starting as a FB driver some where might give a person the opportunity to move into different fields of work. Specialty stuff like oversize or heavy hauling, boats, equiptment, buildings or whatever. To me geting out of the norm and doing things a little different may be the ticket to better pay and conditions. I just never hear of anyone doing that. Most drivers do the same thing year in and year out. Never really advancing or getting much farther ahead. So tell me. For those that have moved on or are trying/wanting to. What are the possibilities?) My questions: Stepdeck trailers are for heavy load, more so then a regular flatbed correct? Question is, I saw a flatbed with 4 axles under the trailer. This is to allow you to haul heavier loads then your regular flatbed right? How much more? Which do you drivers feel would generate more money. Stepdeck? Flatbed spread axle or Flatbed with 4 axles? This is if you were going to buy your own trailer. Thanks. Answer: I would say if you were going to buy your own trailer and wanted to do a little over size/heavy haul hauling I would look at a tri axle single drop step deck trailer. I will always be a mutter carer at heart. Answer: Stepdeck trailers are for heavy load, more so then a regular flatbed correct? Nope. With the same trailer weight and axle configuration (spread or tandem), they carry the same weight. A step will allow you to carry higher loads without obtaining an OD permit. Question is, I saw a flatbed with 4 axles under the trailer. This is to allow you to haul heavier loads then your regular flatbed right? How much more? Depends on axle spacing. For example, a tandem setup allows 34K, spread axle allows 40K because of axle spacing. If the axles are close together (as in tandem), figure 17K per axle. Which do you drivers feel would generate more money. Stepdeck? Flatbed spread axle or Flatbed with 4 axles? This is if you were going to buy your own trailer. This question would probably be better answered in the O/O forum. Keep in mind that the more axles on the ground, loaded or not, the higher the registration fees and, in most cases, tolls. Answer: Detatchable "Lowboy". That way, you can except the loads that need to be driven on to the trailer if there is no crane (or other loading device) available. _________________________ Cover Your Cans People!!! Answer: Go to under the heavy haul listing you may get some of you questions answered. BOL Answer: I don't know alot about the company. I grew up in Racine and saw alot of their equipment around town. Don't know if you want to be owner op, or even if they are are a great company to work for, but it may be worth looking in to.
